It was not until 2008 that Jesper got up the nerve to apply for an elite special forces unit that islegendary in Denmark for driving soldiers to the limits of self-deprivation and mental fortitude. He decided totry out for Sirius, patrolling northeast Greenland’s 8,699-mile coast. Injuries are virtually inevitable, as arehunger and exhaustion and frostbite. Jesper passed a battery of psychological and physical tests thatwinnowed down Sirius applicants. Only six people are chosen each year. Women are eligible, though nonehave yet applied.
