2. The marathon is quite popular in recent(最近的)years. We know the marathon is along-distance(距離)running race of 42.195 kilometers (26.219 miles). A lot of people join allkinds of marathons every year, but few of them know how marathon got its name. In fact, the namecame from the legend(傳說)of a Greek messenger(信使), Pheidippides. He was said to have runall the way from Marathon to Athens to report the victory(勝利)in the Battle of Marathon in 490B.C. He died after that.The marathon became one of Olympic events(比賽項目)in 1892, but the event was only formen at that time.The first winner was Spyridon Louis, a Greek water-carrier. He spent twohours fifty-eight minutes and fifty seconds finishing his running.
The marathon for women wasfirst held in 1984, and the first winner was an American, Joan Benoit. It took her two hourstwenty-four minutes and fifty-two seconds to finish her running.
