Changing human genes is a new field, but scientists modify genes in plants for fifteen years. At first, scientists modified the genes of crops to increase their yields. Scientists added genes from other plants, or sometimes even from animals or fish, to create “better” crops. In the early days of GM(gene modified) crops, the scientists aimed to shorten a crop’s growing time and increase its resistance to the pest. Now, the scientists can do more: they can make the crops taste better and even healthier.
         However, people now have different thoughts on the GM crops. Some people say that we don’t know enough about the GM food; it may do harm to our health in long terms. On the other hand, some people point out that we buy GM crops from U.S. without any health problem. This safety issue of the GM crops is still under discussion.
