問題詳情

People nowadays speak often about their “right” to health. Paying a lot for the medicine and national healthinsurance, they complain about not getting all they think they are paying for, a guarantee to endless betterment. To me,their disappointment is rooted in a mistaken belief that medical interventions and the government’s policy are responsiblefor the most substantial improvement in public health. They do not realize that health is primarily their duty, notmedicine’s or government’s responsibility.First of all, many people believe that society’s level of health depends on medical treatment of the sick. But therelationship between increased investment in medicine and improvements in health is tenuous. Behavior usually has moreto do with how long and healthily people live than does the soaring investment in medical treatments. Scientists havenoted that other animals instinctively eat the right foods (when available) and act in such a way as to maintain theirnaturally given state of health and vigor. Other animals do not overeat, undersleep, knowingly ingest toxic substances, orpermit their bodies to fall into disuse through sloth, watching television, riding in automobiles, etc.And if it is a mistake to assume that medicine, rather than prudence, is the path to health, it is unwise tooveremphasize national health insurance. In fact, national health insurance might do harm by reinforcing public neglectof personal responsibility for health. Moreover, insurance plans spread the burden of paying for illness. The prudent anddutiful are paying heavily for the irresponsible. That is a wrong which should preoccupy people who are eager toestablish “rights” where health is concerned.
