digraph是指兩個字母（字素）發一個音（音素），不論是子音（如 sh）或母音（如 ea 或 a-e），甚至是破擦音（如 ts 或 zz[dz]，雖然是由兩個子音組成，但發音時發一音）或雙母音（如 au 或 ai）。而其中雙母音又稱 diphthong。
