(二)         English is an important language in modern life. However, do you know there are lots of differences between American English and British English? Some words spell differently but have the same meaning between American English and British English. For example, the word “fall” in the USA changes into “autumn” in the UK; the word “candy” in American English means the same as “sweets” in British English; the American word “subway” and the British word “underground” have the same meaning. Besides, some words spell the same but have different meanings. Below are some examples.
   

Still, some words have the same meanings, but they have different spellings at the end of them. In American English, some nouns ending in “or” will use “our” at the end of the words in British English. Another example is “er” at the end of some words in American English but “re” in British English. In addition, some words ending in “ize” in American English turn out “ise” in British English. Just take the American word “center” for example. It is spelled as the word “centre” in British English.        English is not just a subject at school. The more we know about English, the better we’ll understand the culture about it.
