問題詳情
第 47 至 48 為題組 Did you know that the elevators we use now have a long history? In fact, the earliestmention of an elevator can be found in the works of Vitruvius. This Roman architect believedthat the first elevator was constructed by Archimedes in about 236 B.C. These early elevatorswere powered either by hand or by animals, and were believed to have been built in Egypt.Much later, during the industrial era of the 19th century, steam-driven elevators appeared. Thenin 1852, the safety elevator was introduced by Elisha Otis. Its design, which prevented theelevator car from falling, is similar to the one that is still used today. Otis demonstrated hisdevice at the 1854 New York Exposition, and three years later the first passenger elevator wasinstalled in a department store in New York. Otis’s device naturally led to the spread of theelevators. However, the first electric elevator was not invented until 1880 by the Germanengineer Werner von Siemens. Today we have many different kinds of elevators, such asdestination elevators and high-speed elevators. Without doubt, all these have made verticaltransportation in tall buildings much more convenient.
