     People have been putting on masks for twenty thousand years. In many countries, masks are madeof wood and have magic powers. The user of the mask can get supernatural or spirit power from themask. For example, the witch doctors in Africa and Asia put on colorful and sometimes scary masksto make evil spirits leave someone’s body.
     In some cultures, masks are very important in dramas. In Chinese operas and Indonesian dance, many of the characterswear masks. The masks can show whether the characters are good or bad. For example, people in masks look like gods andcome down from the sky to protect the weak people or keep away their bad luck during the dance in Bali.
     Many people believe that when people put on masks, they become the characters of the masks themselves. So, even agood person can become evil if they put on an evil mask. For example, Halloween is a celebration of ghosts and witches inWestern culture. Once the children put on masks, they become those characters. Watch out for the children in a Draculamask! Maybe they’ll drink your blood.
