Many of those who have had itdescribe the moment of peril to be longer and slower than it really was. Similar to scenes inaction movies, our brains seem to go into slow motion when retrieving such a memory. Thisslowing down of time in tense situations is referred to as tachypsychia, or “fast mind.” Thephenomenon is dangerous because it can warp situational awareness and decision-makingprocesses. Yet is tachypsychia real, or an illusion? Researchers hypothesized that fear would spikeone’s critical fusion frequency, or CFF, which allows one to discern the surroundings at aseemingly slower time. However, experiment results show that this is created in our memoryrather than in real time. The brain, retaining everything in memory due to the periloussituation, interprets the length of the experience faultily.Cognitive dysfunction may cause a gap in time perception as well. Further researchsuggests that what lasts 100 milliseconds for the average person might seem like 120milliseconds to someone with schizophrenia. This difference could belie temporal dysfunctionat higher cognitive levels — frequent reports from schizophrenics on hearing voices may justbe a rational interpretation of their experience.Generally speaking, the faster an animal’s metabolism or the smaller its size, the higherits CFF. No wonder it is hard to kill a fly; with a CFF of 240, it might well see yourapproaching hand as though it were muscling through molasses. Aeronautical stunts by birdsare made possible with CFFs around 100, allowing for faster mid-air adjustments.Though current data is too scant to conclude much about CFFs in humans, or even to saywith certainty what the connection is between CFFs and subjective time perception, thevariability of CFFs among animals and those with mental diseases, together with oursubjective experience of time, leaves an open door about the possibilities of temporaldimensions.
