In countries likeFrance, England, Spain, Brazil, etc., major teams have players from many different nations, and these clubs now have fansworldwide. Or perhaps it’s the promise of great wealth. A number of professional soccer players, including Cameroon’sSamuel Eto and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, come from poor families. Today, many of these star players make millionsof euros every year.    Perhaps the ultimate reason for soccer’s universal appeal is this: It’s a simple game. It can be played anywhere withanything—a ball, or whatever serves the same function: a can, a box, or even some bags tied together. And anyone canplay it. You don’t need to be rich to play soccer; you just need a flat space and a ball. It is this unique simplicity that makessoccer the most loved sport in many parts of the world, not just in the more affluent countries in Europe, America and Asia,but also in the more underdeveloped nations in Africa, where children and adults in rural areas play the game every day,often bare-footed with handmade balls.
