         Harper Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama, on April 28, 1926. She is an American novelist, best known for her1960 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird. To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960 and became aninstant international bestseller. In its first year, it sold half a million copies and was translated into 10 languages. It wonthe Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1961 and was adapted to the screen the following year. Lee was 34 when the book waspublished, and it remains her first and only novel.
       Lee’s story unfolds in Maycomb, Alabama, in the 1930s when Atticus Finch, a lawyer and a single father, is calledupon to defend a black man, Tom Robinson, who is accused of raping a poor white girl, Mayella Ewell. The setting andseveral of the characters are drawn from real life. Finch was the maiden name of Lee’s mother, and the character of Dillwas drawn from Capote, Lee’s childhood friend. The trial itself has parallels to the infamous “Scottsboro Trial,” in whichthe charge was rape. In both cases, the defendants were African-American men and their accusers, white women.
