Clare Wang, a 30-year-old woman, was the only Taiwanese that led the popular vote to win the “Best Job in the World” on an island in Australia. The tourism department of the Australian state of Queensland held an online competition to look for a caretaker for Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef. The winner would spend six months on the area diving to watch the wildlife when writing a blog about the experience. The total salary for the job came to NT$3.5 million. She was one of almost 35,000 applicants from all over the world to send in a video recording which explained why she was the most suitable person for the job. In her video application, she stressed the importance of the 1 billion Chinese-speakers all over the world.  Members of the public could watch the video at the web site and vote for their favorite until March 24. The top 10 candidates who were picked up by the Queensland Tourism Board would go to Hamilton for on-the-spot interviews. The winner would be known on May 6, with the job which began on July 1, 2009.
