Discourse Structure: 10%     "NineSongs", or Jiu Ge, were written more than 2,400 years ago by QuYuang, one of the greatest Chinese poets. __(46)__ The verses speakof life, of nature, of love unfulfilled, of the dark hours ofloneliness, and of an honorable death. Throughout the cycle, the poetlaments the fact that the gods fail to appear, or that they appearand quickly vanish. In Lin Hwai-min's full-length production, thechoreographer uses Qu Yuang's Nine Songs as a springboard forcreating a contemporary dance drama. __(47)__ However, hereinterprets these images, giving them a new dimension that reflectshis own concerns about Chinese history and about modern life.__(48)__ Like the poems, the dance also reflects the cycles ofnature. The first half moves from day to night, from the bright andpowerful Sun God to the dark and demoralizing Gods of Fate, who bringmanipulation and abuse to the human world. The second half of thedance follows the seasons: Spring arrives with the Goddess of theXiang River, who gradually becomes a symbol of wasted youth.__(49)__ His powerful authority bears down on the two mortals whocarry himthroughout this section of the dance. In autumn is the lonely danceof the Mountain Spirit, who seems to foresee the pain ahead.Finally, the winter brings death and destruction, and the time to payhomage to those who have suffered and died.     __(50)__Set designer Ming Cho Lee has used the lotus as his main motif. Thelotus is a classical Chinese symbol for the cycle of death andrebirth. The flower buds in spring, blossoms in the summer, withersin autumn, and rots in winter --- to return again in the spring. Thefinal image of the dance reflects this hope of rebirth.
