問題詳情

The hottest news in the US this year, 2016, is the presidential election. Although Hillary Clinton went into the election day with a lead in the polls, Donald Trump has won the election and will become the 45th president of the United States of America. Do you know how the presidential election date was chosen in the US? Here is the history:            In the US, since the 1840s, the presidential election date has been the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November. The date was set because there were a lot of farmers then and there was no way to travel as fast as today.        In November, farmers just finished their work on their farms and were ready for the cold winter to come. That meant they finally had time to do something else. Then, Tuesday was chosen because most farmers at that time traveled by horse. It usually took a day to get to town to vote and another day to get back home. However, most of them went to church on Sundays, had market days on Wednesdays and didn’t want to do something too serious on Fridays, so only Tuesdays were left. Yet, November 1st is All Saints Day, which was a very important holiday for many people then. In order to make sure that the election would never be held on that date, people then chose the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November as the presidential election date.         It’s interesting that even though voting on a weekday is not convenient for modern people, Americans still keep the tradition.
