III.The marathon is quite popular in recent years. We knowthe marathon is a long-distance running race of 42.195 kilometers (26.219 miles). A lot of people join all kinds of marathons every year, but few of them know how marathon got itsname. In fact, the name came from the legend(傳說)of aGreek messenger(信使), Pheidippides. He was said to haverun all the way from Marathon to Athens to report the victory(勝利)in the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. He died afterthat.      The marathon became one of Olympic events(比賽項目)in 1892, but the event was only for men at that time.The first winner was Spyridon Louis, a Greek water-carrier.He spent two hours fifty-eight minutes and fifty seconds finishing his running. The marathon for women was first held in 1984, and the first winner was an American, Joan Benoit. Ittook her two hours twenty-four minutes and fifty-two seconds to finish her running.     According to the IAAF(國際田徑總會), the followingman and woman are the top fastest (updated October 2021).
