Australia is located only a few thousand miles from Antarctica. As a result, theAustralian Antarctic Division (AAD), an agency of the Australian government, is able toconduct extensive research there. The AAD maintains three permanent research stationson Antarctica and sends scientists and support staff to them every year. Because thestations are so remote, these people often work there in isolation for up to nine monthsduring a year. This isolation, coupled with Antarctica’s harsh environment, poses seriousrisks for human health. NASA is making plans for possible humanmissions to other planets like Mars in the future. To prepare for these missions, NASA isstudying how people live and work together for months on end at the AAD stations inAntarctica. This knowledge will help NASA prepare its space travelers for planetarymissions. It will also help NASA understand the special medical needs that will exist onits missions and the medical skills that its space travelers will need to have.
