問題詳情

 B. Humans aren’t the only creatures to experience dramaticchanges as they mature. Monkeys and chimpanzees — allgenetically similar to humans — go through many of thesame biological changes as humans do. Females beginhaving monthly menstrual cycles, and males become largerand more muscular. Some primates go through a change thathumans, fortunately, don’t go through: Their rump colorchanges to red. This happens when the animals gain sexualmaturity. For most mammals, puberty is marked by an increase inaggression. As animals reach reproductive age, they oftenhave to establish themselves in their herd or social group. Inspecies where the males have to compete for access tofemales, signs of aggressive behavior can begin at a youngage. Male gorillas, for example, often give up therough-and-tumble play and become much more aggressiveas they begin to compete for access to mates between theages of 12and 18. Often, they act as if they have morepower or control than they actually have. For some animals, size is just as important as age when itcomes to reaching sexual maturity. Male wood turtles, forexample, look just like the females until they reach about 51/2 inches in length. At that time, the males’ tails becomelonger and thicker. Their bottom shell changes shape, too, taking on an indentation that makes it look somewhatconcave. The change in males’ shell-shape allows them tomount females during mating without falling off.  For all critters, the changes that occur during puberty haveevolved for a single reason: to help them reproduce. In somespecies, such as birds of paradise, the males gain colorful,eye-popping feathers while the females remain ratherdrab-looking by comparison. In flamingos both sexes turn abright shade of pink when they hit puberty.
