         Over more than one-quarter of the world, there is solittle rain that almost nothing will grow. This is desert.There are hot deserts and cold deserts. In hot deserts,there is very little water in the air and there are no clouds.There is nothing to stop the rays of the sun hitting theground, which becomes very hot by day. But when the sunsets, the dry ground quickly loses its heat and the nights arecold.
         The air is very clear because there is no water in it.People can see things that are far away very clearly and atnight the stars seem near and bright. Sometimes the hot airrising from the ground looks like water. Thirsty travelershurry towards it but find that there is no water, only sand.
         Sometimes there are sandstorms(沙暴). Strongwinds blow the sand across the desert and the sun goesdark. Then people traveling in the sandstorm area covertheir heads and wait for the storm to stop. They areusually over quickly.
