IV. 閱讀測驗題組。6% Part A for Q40~42 Ethan: Hi, Amy. Amy: Hi, Ethan. What are you doing here? Ethan: This store has the most kinds of gifts in town. I want to give Emma a special gift.  Amy: Which Emma? You mean the Emma from Korea? Ethan: No, I’m talking about the Emma from Japan. She’s in the same office with me now. Amy: Oh, that Emma. Why are you buying her a gift? Is it a birthday gift?  Ethan: No, it’s not. It’s a housewarming gift. She invited me to her housewarming party next week.Amy: I see. Have you decided on the gift? Ethan: Emma has such beautiful long hair, so I want to buy her a comb. Amy: Well, we Japanese don’t usually give combs as gifts. The word “comb” sounds like “pass away” in our language. Ethan: What? You pronounce “die” the same as “comb”? Amy: Yes, we do. Ethan: Um…how about this tablecloth? Purple is a beautiful color, isn’t it? Amy: Yes, it is, but the color “purple” means “sad” to Japanese. Ethan: I’ve never heard of this. What about this ashtray (菸灰缸)? Amy: I don’t think it’s a good idea. Ethan: Why not? Emma and her husband are both heavy smokers, aren’t they? Amy: We don’t give a lighter or an ashtray as a housewarming gift because it is related to (有相連性) fire. Ethan: Then what gifts do you Japanese usually give as a housewarming gift? Amy: We usually give them a red envelope with 30,000 Japanese yens. Ethan: What?! That’s over NT$8000!!! Amy: Take it easy. I’m just kidding. Maybe a set of bone china cups makes great gifts. Ethan: Sounds good.
