When you are overwhelmed by tight schedules and series of assignments, it can be hard to get started or maintain motivation. Thankfully, there is help—in the form of a tomato. That’s the symbol of the Pomodoro Technique, a popular study plan that is meant to 21 your focus and assist you in completing all your tasks faster with less mental fatigue.
An Italian student Francesco Cirillo created the technique when he started dividing his study time into chunks. He worked hard for a set time and then took a short rest. He managed his time by using a simple kitchen timer that resembled a tomato. Cirillo went on to name the system 22 the tomato-shaped timer, calling it “pomodoro,” the Italian word for tomato.
Practicing this technique is easy. For a start, set a timer for 25 minutes. During that time, work steadily and avoid any 23 such as emails, or social media. Then, when the 25 minutes are up, it’s time for a five-minute pause. Each of these half-hour units is called Pomodoro. Keep working, and after four Pomodoros, you will be rewarded with a 24 break of 15 to 20 minutes. Amazingly, many people find that taking breaks periodically to relax their brains helps them restore their attentiveness 25 , the basic rule of thumb is to stay concentrated for just 25 minutes of uninterrupted work. Give it a try, and you will figure out why the technique has made a big splash!
