3.        On the South Korean island of Jeju, there is a special group of women known for theirstrength. In Korean, they are called haenyeo, or sea women. They are women divers who collectfood from the sea to sell at markets.        Sea diving is difficult work and hard on the body. Many of the divers swim 30 meters deepand stay under water for up to 3 minutes at a time. Because they dive so deep, the pressure ofthe water causes pain to their bodies. Also, the water can be very cold in the winter. Beforediving suits, these sea women wore cloth suits. These were not good for keeping the diverswarm. Men could stay in the water for no longer than 30 minutes. This is why there are no maledivers. Physically, the women were better able to be in the cold water and could dive for hours.Though the divers wear warmer diving suits now, all of the divers are still women.        Though the work is hard, most of these women are not young. In fact, almost all of thedivers are over 50 years old. The oldest is in her 80s. She has been diving for more than 60years! These women continue to dive because sea diving is the way they make money for theirfamilies. Sea women can earn up to $5,000 a month. This is a good source of money to pay forhousing, food, and education. However, the work is so hard that the women do not want theirdaughters to do it. So the tradition is dying out. There may be very few sea women in the nearfuture.
