instead of N.與in lieu of N.都有「取而代之、而非、並不是」的意思。請注意instead是一個單字，不可寫成in stead；而in lieu是分開的兩個單字喔。只有在「in 所有格 stead」的用法中才可以把in與stead分開，所有格是要寫被取代、被放棄的那個名詞。例句：I slept with my cicisbeo in my husband's stead since he was too tired.
