1 It could get much worse if simultaneous outbreaks of seasonal flu and H1N1 lead to even more widespread use of the drug.2 Previous studies have suggested that the top levels found in Tokyo’s rivers are high enough to develop drug-resistant strains of flu.3 Researchers at Tokyo University in Japan have released a study indicating that the antiinfluenza drug Tamiflu can pass through sewage treatment plants and into rivers.4 Since waterfowl are attracted to the warm, nutrient-rich discharge from those plants, there is a real danger that the fowl are being unintentionally dosed with Tamiflu.5 The threat is particularly acute in Japan, where prescription rates of Tamiflu are higher than the rest of the world.
