問題詳情

(II)
Do you like to go to libraries? Libraries are gateways to knowledge and culture. You can borrow allkinds of books for free. You have to pay only if your books are overdue or you lose them. However, things didn’t go that way years ago. In 1900, people hardly had books because they were expensive. Onlyrich people had their own small libraries in their houses. If you were one of their friends, you got achance to borrow books. A few places had libraries, but the borrowers had to pay for them.
Thanks to Andrew Carnegie, one of the richest man in the world, more and more public librarieswere set. He not only gave away a lot of money to help the poor and the working-class Americans butalso helped 2,509 public libraries. The reason why he helped build so many libraries was that buildingfree libraries had always been his dream. He was born into poor family in 1835. When he was young, healways made good use of time and threw himself into his work and reading. He strongly believed that tobe born poor didn’t mean that one would always be poor. Everyone could become better by reading. Andbecause of his large and kind donations of money, many places in America have free libraries now, andmore and more people have a chance to get more knowledge.
