, 2020, a minor lexical revolution rolled through Japan. A new decree ordainedthat official documents should reverse the order of Japanese people's names when they are renderedin the Latin alphabet. Hitherto in, say, English documents, Japanese names have been written withthe given name first, using the Western practice. Henceforth the family name will come first and, tobanish any ambiguity, may be entirely capitalized. For instance, the Japanese prime minister will bereferred to as ABE Shinzo rather than Shinzo Abe.

        National pride motivates many advocates of the change. From a Japanese perspective, itrepresents "authenticity and normalization." The fact that Asian powers are on the rise, bothgeopolitically and culturally, is a reason for making the change. 

       In fact, Japanese conservatives do not sec why they should say their names backwards just forthe convenience of Western minds that are too lazy to grasp a basic facet of Japanese culture. Some59% of Japanese in a recent opinion poll favored reverting to surame-first. Yet there is an irony.Japan first decided to put given en names first when talking to foreigners way back in the 1870s,during the Mejji era. This decision was made mainly by nationalist reformers, who opted forabandoning cultural practices imported from China in favor of Western ways in everything frommilitary affairs to education.
