Taoyuan Airport Takes Steps to Avoid Bird Strikes The Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is now seeing fewer bird strikes over the pastfew years. A bird strike is when a bird flying in the sky gets hit by a manmade vehicle,usually a plane. Not only is this deadly for birds, it is also very dangerous for people. Most often in bird strikes, the bird hits the front window of a plane, or gets sucked into oneof the engines. This damages the plane, sometimes so seriously that the plane crashes, leadingto hurts and even deaths.  And in the past few years, Taoyuan Airport has been taking steps to prevent thesedangerous events from happening. The airport is working with local bird experts to encouragebirds to go somewhere else, instead of hunting or killing them. For example, cattle egretsare a medium-sized white bird often seen in Taiwan, and sometimes around the airport. Butthey do not like fields of tall grass. So the airport has allowed grass near airport runways togrow to about 30 centimeters tall, in order to encourage the egrets to keep away. And black-winged kites are white and grey birds of prey that hunt mice and rodents. Theairport has set up places for them to rest on farmlands in the area.
