The ideafor the first Earth Day came from the American Senator, G. Nelson. In 1970, pollution in theUS was a serious problem. Nelson asked the country to protest and over 20 million peopledid it. It was the first Earth Day in history. Twenty years later, people from other countriesgot together again to call for more action. That year, 200 million people from 141 countriescelebrated Earth Day together around the world. In 2000, around 500 million people from184 countries took part in it.
