A Trojan horsc or Trojan is a type of malware that is often disguised as legitimatesoftware. It is called a Trojan because its idca is based on the partly historical, partly mythological story from ancient Greece.
The Trojan war was fought between the Trojans who lived in what is modern dayTurkey and the Greeks who lived across the Aegean Sea. The problem beganwhen Paris, a prince of Troy, eloped with or kidnapped Helen, the wife ofMenelaus, the King of Sparta in Greece. Menelaus wanted to organize anexpedition to get her back from the city of Troy. He asked his brotherAgamemnon, King of Mycenae in Greece, to be the leader of the expedition.Greek heroes like Achilles, Ajax, Odysseus, and thousands of warriors joined withthem. More than 1000 ships from all over Greece set sail across the Aegean Seafor Troy. They wanted to demand that Priam, the king of Troy, return Helen. After landing their army near Troy, the Greeks began laying siege to the city, thehome of the Trojans. Although many battles were fought outside the city's thick, high walls, the Trojans kept their adversaries at bay, so the Greeks were unable toforce their way inside. The war dragged on for ten long years. Individual battlestook place outside the walls when Trojan heroes came out to fight Greeks. TheGreek hero Achilles chased a Trojan prince Hector around the walls and killedhim in revenge. Hector had killed Achilles' best friend Patroclus. Later, the Trojanprince Paris killed Achilles with an arrow in the only place in his body where hewas vulnerable. According to mythology, Achilles' mother had dipped him in theRiver Styx in the Underworld to protect him from death. However, because sheheld him by his heel to dip him, his heel was not touched by the water and wasnot immortal. Then one day the Trojan sentinels saw the Grecks sail away. Further investigationrevealed that the Greeks had abandoned their camp. In reality, they sailed just outof sight of Troy. The delighted Trojans at once declared the war over andthemselves victorious. One thing that baffled them, though, was that the Greekshad left behind an enormous wooden horse on the beach. A Greek deserter namedSinon told the Trojans that the Greeks had left the horse as an atonement sacrificeto Athena because the Greek Odysseus had stolen her statue from a Trojan temple. The Greeks wanted to get back her favor. The Trojan finally decided that theirenemies had left it as a gift to the gods. The Trojan princess Cassandra, who was a seer or a prophet, warned the Trojansthat the wooden horse was a trick intended to bring about the destruction of theircity. The Trojans, however, scoffed at her warning. Some years before, Apollo, one of the gods of Mount Olympus, had fallen in love with Cassandra and hadgiven her the ability to predict the future. But when she failed to return his love,Apollo spitefully declared that when she made a prediction, no one would believeher. The Trojans saw nothing sinister in the "gift" left by the Grecks. Also, the god Poseidon sent two serpents out of the sea to strangle his Trojanpriest Laocoon and his- two sons. Laocoon had warned the Trojans about bringingthe horse into the city. Poseidon was angry with the king of Troy. He wanted thecity of Troy destroyed. Sinon told the Trojans that it was so big because theGreeks didn't want the Trojans to be able to take it inside the city. The Trojansdecided they wanted it inside the city so broke down the walls and dragged it in. The people of Troy rejoiced far into the night because of the Greeks' departure. They were too busy enjoying themselves to pay close attention to the colossalwooden horse in their midst. They failed to examine it closely enough to detectthe heavily armed Greek soldiers huddled inside, waiting for the right moment. Atlast the celebrations came to an end as the Trojans grew sleepy and one by onebegan to slumber. A stillness fell over the city. All seemed tranquil within Troy'swalls. Then a concealed hatch in the wooden horse opened, and the Greek soldiersemerged, dropping silently to the ground. They quickly overpowered the Trojanguards and opened the city gates to admit the rest of the Greek soldiers, who hadonly pretended to sail away and were now hiding outside. Greeks swarmed outand fought the Trojans all over the city. The other Greeks sailed back, and the citywas captured. The Trojans paid a terrible price for their blunder. Their city was destroyed, andmany of its people perished, the rest of the woeful inhabitants, includingCassandra, were taken into captivity. As for Helen, according to the most popularversion of the story, she returned to Grecce with Menelaus, and they lived happilyever after. In the computer age, Trojan took on the new meaning of malware that is oftendisguised as legitimate software. Trojans can be employed by cyber-thieves andhackers trying to gain access to users' systems. Users are typically tricked bysome form of social engineering into loading and executing Trojans on theirsystems. Once activated, Trojans can enable cyber-criminals to spy on the users, steal their sensitive data, and gain backdoor access to their system. In the computer age, Trojan took on the new meaning of malware that is oftendisguised as legitimate software.
