Reading 2: Stress
Stress is one of the most common health problems in our high-pressure, constantly changing society.Bad enough in itself, stress also causes such illnesses as anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Therapy, anti-anxiety drugs, and sleeping pills have all proven effective in treating stress. However, there are also natural remedies which anyone can try in place of clinical treatment. Here are a few of them. Get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. Physical activity burns off nervous energy and can help you cope with stressful circumstances. Express your stress through writing. Journal-keeping is considered beneficial for stress sufferers, while creative writing can help children and teens cope with anxiety.
Since stress is often caused by multitasking, focus on one commitment at a time. Break major projects down into small, manageable parts and use a daily planner or calendar to help you manage your time. Try aromatherapy. Certain scents are especially effective in treating stress. Lavender, for example, has been shown to reduce heart rates and improve sleep. Spend time with animals. Pets can alleviate many mental health issues and are particularly helpful in cases of post-traumatic stress. Drink herbal teas. Herbs such as chamomile, which can adjust levels of the stress hormone cortisol, have a direct effect on the brain.
While any or all of these remedies might help you to control stress, consult a doctor if they seem
ineffective. Different treatments work for different people, and other medical conditions (such as an
overactive thyroid gland) can sometimes cause stress. Knowing which substances and/or lifestyle changes suit you best will allow you to live a happier, healthier life.
