      October, 30, 2018 was a sad day for the fans of Chinese martial arts novel around the world. That was when Louis Cha, also famous for his pen name Jin Yong, died in Hong Kong at the age of 94. As an    outstanding    martial arts novelist, Cha sold over 300 million copies of his books at the time of his death. Some even say Jin Yong is the name all Chinese people should know.
      Cha showed a talent for writing when he was young. While he was in a law school, he worked
as a journalist to continue his studies. Readers loved the way he wrote the news and later his
stories. Then his first novel, The Book and the Sword in 1955, was soon a big success. In his books,
he wrote about Kung Fu masters and heroes, and also Chinese history and culture. You can also
read people’s problems in Cha’s novels and how they deal with them. His novels are not just
popular with Chinese-speaking countries. A few of his works were translated into English. We can
also find Cha’s martial arts stories in lots of movies, comic books, TV shows and video games.
      Cha was a hard-working person. Although he was quite successful, he went back to school and got a doctorate degree in Chinese history from St. John’s College at the University of Cambridge in 2010.
