In May 1927, Charles Lindbergh became the first person to fly non-stop across the AtlanticOcean from New York to Paris. This was a milestone in aviation history. In the years before hisepic journey, Lindbergh had made hundreds of air-mail delivery flights from St. Louis to manyparts of the United States. It was during one of these flights that he invented the idea of flying soloacross the Atlantic. Flying alone in all kinds of weather, he believed he could do what no one elsehad been able to do successfully. He named his aircraft the Spirit of St Louis and supervised everydetail of production and testing before the flight. Extra fuel tanks had to be fitted, which made theaircraft very difficult to fly. It was so extremely uncomfortable, because the cockpit was small andcramped. But, Lindbergh was an aviator with immense courage and determination, who refused togive in to fatigue on the long thirty-three and a half hour flight to Paris. The Spirit of St Louis isnow permanent display in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington. Aviation has come along way since Lindbergh’s groundbreaking flight.
