Sydney Opera House looks like a sailing ship in full sail on the water. Jorn Utzon, a designer fromDenmark,designed the Opera House when he was only 38 years old. After his design stood out from 233 designs, a group of engineers along with him started to build the Opera House in 1957. At first, Utzon said, “I will spend four years building the Opera House.” Actually, he finished it in 1973.
It took so many years to finish it because the design faced a big problem. Utzon tried very hard to deal with it. One morning, he came into his office with an orange. While peeling the orange, he suddenly understood one thing. The idea of building shell roof could come from the sphere. At last, he made it. And the self-cleaning roof made Sydney Opera House a special building. Besides, the Opera House was the first example of the use of the computer analysis to design its shape.
