問題詳情

I’d like to share with you two incidents which occurred while I was in Australia. I was in Canberra, 1 my first long stay abroad. I had bought a desk lamp. But when I got backto my apartment, I found that it was broken. I returned to the store to exchange it. The clerk simply said, “Isee. Do you want to exchange it?” I was shocked and felt insulted because in Japan the clerk wouldapologize 2 in such a situation. Later an Australian told me that Australians tend to regard it as thecustomer’s fault because the customer did not notice it was broken. I could understand that shop assistantscannot be held responsible for manufacturing defects. However, I felt that Japanese would not feel thisway; their apologies are not only 3 to a sense of personal responsibility, but also to a desire for aharmonious atmosphere. On another occasion, an Australian student drove into the car of one of my Japanese friends. The nextday, my friend and I went to the Australian’s house to discuss 4 , but the student was not in. Althoughher parents were there, they did not express any apology for what their daughter had done. We were offendedat their behavior and felt that the Australian parents were impolite and even insulting. However, discussingthe incident with some Australian friends, I was told that the Australian parents’ attitude was 5 becausetheir daughter was an adult and thus should be responsible for her own behavior.
