73-76 題     Earth Day began in 1970. It was started by a senator from Minnesota namedGaylord Nelson. In the 1960s, Senator Nelson worked hard to pass laws to protect theenvironment. He gave speeches about taking better care of the Earth. He wanted to geteveryone involved, so he decided to set aside one special day to honor our planet.   Earth Day was first held on April 22, 1970. It was a great success. People marchedin parades. At picnics and rallies, people made speeches about protecting the environment.Americans pitched in to clean up their neighborhoods, towns, and cities. Volunteerscleaned up rivers, lakes, and ocean waters and shorelines.    This day marked the beginning of the environmentalist movement in the UnitedStates. Congress passedstricter laws against air and water pollution. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) was set up. The EPA's job is to make sure that people, businesses, and thegovernment obey laws that have been passed to keep the Earth clean    This Earth Day was not celebrated again until 1990. This time, people all over the world were invited to participate. On April 22, 1990, more than 200 million people in 141different countries celebrated the first International Earth Day. People then decided tocelebrate this Earth Day every year. According to the Earth Day Network, in 2009, it wascelebrated by more than one billion people world-wide. The U.N. also participated in thisEarth Day celebration.    Earth Day has united people around the world who are interested in voicing theirconcerns about the Earth. Cities in 184 different countries now hold Earth Day events andprograms. Displays are set up to show better ways of using energy and natural resources.Nature walks and wild life art shows are included in many celebrations. Volunteers planttrees, grass, and other plants.
