The horrific images seen on television screens of the Fukushima and 2004 Indian Ocean tsunamis have found a permanent place in many people's memories. Fortunately, 32 having regular earthquakes, tsunamis have not been common in Taiwan. In fact, there have only been six in recorded history.  In April 1781, Luermen, Chiatung, and many villages on the southwest coast of Taiwan were destroyed by a giant 30-meter wave. Witnesses reported 33 the ocean roar like thunder before the wave washed away everything in its path.  On December 18, 1867, the northern city of Keelung took the full force of a massive earthquake which shook the whole island. Newspaper reports from the time described entire mountains tilting and giant cracks appearing in the ground. Keelung Harbor was completely drained of water exposing the seabed. A few minutes later, a huge tsunami raced through the city. It was 34 powerful 34 boats and ships were washed into the center of the city. 35 people unfortunately lost their lives.
