Reading Comprehension 5%      Mothershold a special place in the hearts of people all over the world, andmany people have a special day on which to honor them.    Theearliest celebrations for a mother were part of an ancient Greekfestival to welcome the coming of spring and honor Rhea, the motherof the gods. Later, during the 1600s, “Mothering Sunday” wasfirst celebrated in England. In some areas of the country, servantswere given the day off on Mothering Sunday so they could visit theirmothers. In other parts of England, people used this day to celebratethe “Mother Church,” which is themain church of the area. People usually went to the “DaughterChurch” in the parish on most Sundays and it was consideredimportant to return to their Mother Church once a year. They wouldreturn home to visit their Mother Church and their own mothers aswell on Mothering Sunday. Eventually, Mothering Sunday became a dayfor people throughout Europe and the British Isles to honor boththeir mothers and the Church.    Inthe United States, a woman named Ana Jarvis proposed that the secondSunday in May be set aside to honor mothers throughout thenation. Her hometown of Philadelphia was the first to celebrateMother’s Day on that day in 1908. Ms. Jarvis wrote to churches andbusiness leaders across the country to encourage them to celebrateMother’s Day in the communities, too. The holiday then becamewidespread, and in 1914 the second Sunday in May was named as theUnited States’ official Mother’s Day.    Mother’sDay is also celebrated in many other countries, including Sweden,Mexico, Australia, Japan, China, Canada, and Singapore. Youngchildren and adults celebrate this special day with their mothers,giving them gifts of flowers and candy to thank them for their loveand kindness.
