As adults, many of us can recall the excitement we felt as children when given theopportunity to visit the library and read books of all kinds. However, in recent years, parentshave noticed a concerning trend: a    8    number of children seem to be reading for leisure.According to a survey conducted by the National Assessment for Educational Progress, thepercentage of 9-to-13-year-olds that regularly read for fun has    9    significantly since 1984.While there are several factors that may contribute to this trend, experts believe that theincreasing allure of screens is a major culprit.
       During the pandemic, with many children attending school remotely, online videowatching has become unavoidable. In addition, platforms like YouTube and Tiktok have seen asignificant increase in usage, while reading time has remained    10    . Some experts suggestthat reading for pleasure may be the key to reversing this trend. Now, reading for fun is not thesame as doing assigned reading. Children need to be able to relax with the reading material oftheir choice in order to truly enjoy the experience. When we limit children's reading choices,we deprive them of the opportunity to explore the vast world of literature that awaits them. Thejoy of diving into a good book is one of the greatest gifts that parents can    11    to theirchildren.
