問題詳情

【13-15】     I remember one of my relatives came to my house once and complained about having to buy bread. She said, "There was only one type of bread all my life, but I was just at the bakery and there are 100 different types now! I hate that ! I have everything!” And as a kid I remember thinking, “What’s wrong with her?” But now that I think about it, she did have a point. Of course I don’t want to live in a place   (13)   I can only buy one type of bread, but at the same time, it’s a waste of time just standing there and picking from 100 different types of bread!      The tests below show that having too many choices may not always lead to the result we expect. The salespeople were trying to sell some high-quality jams. In Test One, they offered 24 samples, and in Test Two, they offered only 6. So what were the results? Well, the large number of samples attracted more people, but when it comes to buying, there was a huge difference! Only 3% of the people offered 24 jam samples bought the jam; however, 30% of the people offered only 6 jam samples went on to buy the jam!     How about taking a look at the menu in restaurants? It’s just impossible to make a choice! They have successfully confused you, but they also conveniently offer you five specials for the day—though a lot of time, these specials will never even change. It’s clear that if you’ve been offered something you can deal with more easily, you’re much more likely to pick from this selection, and that’s it—what you choose is exactly what they want to sell to you with high margins.      Here’s another example. A lot of authors and masters have a reading list of their favorite books, and they probably put like 200 books on it. But when you look at the list, how do you feel? Most people are just going to be paralyzed—there’s too much choice! So guess what most people are going to do? They will not pick anything at all. Will you?      All the different choices are supposed to make you better, but they can cause paralysis and actually make you worse. Isn’t that surprising?
