問題詳情
五、閱讀測驗: I.Those who endeavor to write in English are often met with admonitions to be clear andconcise, along with warnings that unconventional or flowery language is “likely to distractreaders from the message being conveyed. However, there are times when writers wish toexpress ideas creatively, seeking to focus on aesthetic appeal without forgoing clarity.Fortuitously, the English language makes available a number of ways to do this. Modes ofexpression are sometimes referred to as literary devices. Some literary devices make use of artistic license – the notion that writers of literatureand poetry need not always be constrained by the limitations of grammar. One such device isasyndeton, the intentional omission of conjunctions. This omission can have a profound effecton the rhythm of a sentence, allowing a writer to streamline what would otherwise be acumbersome turn of phrase by eliminating “ands” and “ors.” The appeal of asyndeton is mostclearly illustrated in a common English translation of the Latin phrase veni, vidi, vici, whichis rendered as “I came, I saw, I conquered.” Another method of trimming down sentences isthe use of ellipsis, the omission of words that, although grammatically required, can beremoved without sacrificing comprehension. This device often mimics the pragmatic brevityof spoken English, such as the removal of the second instance of “will help” in the sentence “Iwill help you, and you me.” For writers seeking the opposite effect, there is polysyndeton –the insertion of superfluous conjunctions where a simple comma would suffice, a literarydevice that serves to slow the rhythm of a sentence and gives it greater gravity. This can beseen from a line in the fable The Three Pigs, in which the destructive actions of the Big Badwolf are described as “he huffed, and he puffed, and he blew the house down.”
