In a subsetof cases, dysesthesia—an abnormal, unpleasant sensation—canresult; it is often described as a burning or sharp electric shocklikesensation. When a patient complains of burning or sharp shocklikepain in the face or mouth, pain of neuropathic origin shouldbe included in the differential diagnosis. One should appreciatethat the oral cavity is the most common site of amputation, ifone recognizes amputations to include the teeth and the dentalpulp (i.e., endodontics).
