Two of these ways are copyright andtrademarks.Copyrights protect “original works of authorship.” This would include something creativethat is written down or presented visually. Such things as books, musical compositions,paintings, and even movies and architecture can all be protected by copyrights. Whiletypical patents may only last a short time and then need to be re-registered, for mostwritten works, the copyright lasts for the life of the author plus 50 years. After this timehas passed, the works are no longer protected by the copyright. They are then classified aspart of the “public domain,” and anyone can copy or use them without permission.Trademarks, on the other hand, protect product designs and slogans that a business uses todistinguish its product from other companies’ products. For example, Nike is well-knownfor its “Swoosh” logo as well as its motto, “Just do it.” No other company can use either ofthese for its own purposes because they are already trademarks that belong to Nike. Onespecial type of trademark is the “trade secret.” A trade secret protects any specialinformation used to make a company’s product. A good example is Coca-Cola, which hasits soft drink formula protected from copying by a trade secret trademark. This means thatthe ingredients used to make its product can remain secret.
