Sherlock: __________ John: Yes, there’s one.(A) Where is your notebook?(B) Are there many erasers on the table?(C) Are there any cats in the room?(D) Are these your dogs?什麼時候用 there？英文中的 there 是用來帶出名詞的，表示這個名詞的「存在」或是某人事物的「位置」，放在句首的時候其實在中文裡是沒有對應的解釋的。剛剛問題中的句子：There are some eggs in the fridge.（有一些蛋在冰箱裡）就是要表達那些蛋的「位置」是在冰箱裡，前面的 there 並沒有夾帶意思，只是用來帶出主角 some eggs。其他例子：There was a water shortage problem after the typhoon damaged the reservoir.（在颱風毀壞水庫之後，就有水資源短缺的問題。）因為要表達的是問題的「存在」，所以一樣用 there was 來帶出來。會發現 be 動詞會隨著後面名詞的單複數做變化喔，因為 some eggs 是複數，所以是 There are some eggs...；a water shortage problem 是單數，所以是 There was a water shortage problem...。後面有動詞，怎麼辦？There is 以及 there are 後面如果還要加上動詞的話，有兩種形式：現在分詞（V-ing）或是過去分詞（V-ed）。差別就在於現在分詞的動作是「主動的」，而過去分詞的動作是「被動的」。例如：There are a lot of people protesting against the newly-passed labor law.（有許多人在抗議新通過的勞工法。）因為 people 是主動做出 protest「抗議」的，所以要用現在分詞形式的 protesting。再舉個例子：There are many gifts placed under the Christmas tree.（有很多禮物被放在聖誕樹下。）因為 gifts 是「被放置」的，所以要用過去分詞形式的 placed。
