More than 2500 years ago, when a baby was born in Sparta, the father would check its body carefully. If the baby’s body wasdeformed or not strong enough, the father would leave it in the mountains to die. Healthy babies would stay with parents. Whenthey turned seven, they went to school. There, they didn’t have enough food to eat and had to sleep on the floor. Besides that, theirteachers made them run fast, jump high, and fight to stay alive. There were no quizzes or tests, but once a year, there was a game ofstealing cheese. Students had to get pieces of cheese successfully, but their classmates would try to stop them by hitting them hard.
