42-44)Each month of the year has stories to tell and May is no exception.The month May was named for the Greek goddess Maia, who kept her eye on the growthof plants, to whom the Romans sacrificed on the first day of the month.Maia was one of the Pleiades, the seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione. After Atlas wasforced to carry the heavens on his shoulders, Orion began to pursue all of the Pleiades, and Zeustransformed them first into doves, and then into stars to comfort their father. These seven starsform the constellation known as the Pleiades. And the constellation of Orion is said to stillpursue them across the night sky.On any clear night you may see these stars clustered closely together, but they are not verybright, one of them being very faint indeed. A story says that at first they shone brightly, butafter the capture of Troy by the Greeks they grew pale with sadness. Another story says that allbut one were married to gods, and that when they became stars the one who had married amortal did not shine so brightly as her sisters.
