Traditionally, the power required to attain a certain speed in a seawayhas been determined from the still water performance of the vessel after making anallowance of 15 to 30% for wind and waves. However, progress made in seakeeping, inboth analytical methods and experimental techniques, makes it possible to determine theadded resistance in a seaway with sufficient accuracy for design purposes. The seawayresistance is often represented by either an addition of power to sustain the speed or aspeed loss to maintaining the same amount of power as is used in calm water.
