B.                             A Memborable Painter      On March

, 1947, a man was shot and dead in front of Chiayi Station. He was the greatest artist ever in Taiwan.Cheng-Po Chen, born in Chiayi, studied Western-style watercolor painting and was taught by Kinichiro Ishikawa. After six years of being an elementary school teacher, he passed the exam and was allowed to enter the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. During Chen’s studies in Japan, some of his paintings were selected several times for Imperial Art Exhibition. Chen was much affected by Impressionists, and one of his famous works is “Street of Chiayi”, which he cleverly used colors to present natural light.     After Chen’s death, many of his works were kept carefully by his wife.
