At one time, the company made trains, planes, boats, buses and trucks. But during World War II, bombs damaged the company’s factories. The war also damaged many Italian roads. So afterthe war, people needed a cheap way to get around on bad roads.  Piaggio asked an airplane engineer to solve the problems. He did not like motorcycles because they were heavy, uncomfortable and difficult to fix. They also made people’s clothes dirty. So, using airplane parts, he designed a light, comfortable scooter. It was easy to drive, easy to fix, and it kept the rider’s clothes clean. It was also easy for both men and women to ride.  The new scooter made a unique sound like an insect. So it was called the “Vespa,” which means “wasp” in Italian. The vespa quickly became very popular. Within ten years, more than 1 million had been sold. Soon the Vespa had been in movies and on TV. Today, people ride Vespa scooters all over the world. The Vespa has become a symbol of Italian style.
