Unless the patient avoids contacting the prosthesis when eating, internal stresses are similar to those occurring in the definitive restoration. However, the strength of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin is about one-twentieth that of metal-ceramic alloys, and thus the interim fixed restoration is much more likely to fracture.
