聯合國於1989年12月9日宣布1994年爲「國際家庭年」（International Year of the Family，簡稱IYF）元年，並於1993年宣布從1994年起，每年5月15日爲「國際家庭日」（International Day of Families，簡稱IDF），國際家庭年的倡導，是期待人們學習用生命和愛心去建立家庭，並以人人都能擁有溫暖（warmth）、關懷（care）、安全（security）、相聚（togetherness）、包容（tolerance）、接納（acceptance）的家庭為目標。
