(A) Could someone be swallowed by a whale — and live? In 1891, a young English sailor named Bartley was swallowed by a whale, and he was still alive. Bartley was a crew member on the whaling ship “Star of the East.” One day, when his boat was turned upside down by a whale, he was missing.       The next morning, as sailors were cutting up the dead whale, they found Bartley was inside the whales’ stomach. He was still alive but his face, neck, and hands were bleached white by the whale’s stomach juices.        Later Bartley told other people about his own experience. He knew he was in the water. Then, suddenly he was in darkness, sliding along a slimy passageway. The heat was so great that it made him pass out.
